"The 1999 Axios is superb, intense and firm, with
tender cassis and black cherry flavors. Of today's cult wines, it
reminds me the most of Harlan Estate, in that it combines powerful fruit
with a silky ,smooth-feel making it almost irresistible to drink now, even
though a wine this superior deserves to be cellared."
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: June 29, 2002
"A Maryland wholesaler, Constantine Wines, is the
force behind this limited production. Cabernet Sauvignon made by
David Arthur's winemaker. An opaque purple color is followed by aromas
and flavors of blackberry liqueur, spice box, licorice, and judicious wood.
Dense, rich, and unevolved, it is a beautifully balanced, strikingly
pure, layered effort that requires several more years to reveal additional
nuances. Certainly, the quality of the fruit, depth, and texture
are all there. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2017."
Wine Spectator: June 20, 2002
"Remarkably complex and well-made, with a core
of earthy currant, black cherry, beetroot, anise, tobacco and cedar notes.
Turns earthier on the finish, with firm tannins. Winemaker Bob
Egelhoff sources grapes from Sacrashe Vineyards (95 percent) and Clark Family
Estate Vineyard (5 percent). Axios is Greek for "worthy"-a tribute
to owner Gus Kalaris' Greek heritage. Best from 2004-2012.-J.L."
